This is Menopause

Women continue to experience inconsistent and inadequate care from GPs in relation to the menopause. This is Menopause is a participatory research project funded by UKRI Research England and led by Pauline Ferrick-Squibb. The project comprised two phases: Phase One explored women’s portraits and lived experiences of menopause, while Phase Two used creative workshops to investigate experiences of healthcare and care provision.
Participants used printmaking, drawing, embroidery, and AI text-to-image generation to reflect on and communicate their experiences and those of others. These processes culminated in a collaborative quilt that brought together individual stories and collectively advocated for improved menopause care. The quilt was exhibited alongside 19 portraits of lived experience and a 20-minute film documenting participants’ conversations about menopause, creating a multimodal representation of women’s experiences and perspectives
